Glasgow Clinical Research Facility

The Glasgow Clinical Research Facility (CRF) is an NHS initiative funded entirely by a grant from the Scottish Chief Scientist's Office (CSO) to Greater Glasgow & Clyde Health Board.

I was appointed as Director of Operations in April 2006 and my remit was to create and manage a unit dedicated to the provision of clinical research services for the conduct of both commercial and non-commercial clinical trials.

Since receiving our funding in April 2006 we have established a Unit within the Western Infirmary and are developing a site at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. We now have 3 senior management staff, 20 nursing staff, 7 admin staff and 2 education staff.

My role is to develop a strategy for the operation of the CRF and to meet the specific targets set for the facility by our funder, the CSO. These are primarily concerned with increasing commercial and non-commercial clinical trial activity, the development of a Research Nurse Faculty, and the provision of GCP training.

Our clinical activity has increased steadily over the first three years of operations with 1400 patient visits in year 1, 1900 in year 2 and 4800 in year 3. With the support of our clinical colleagues and the public we hope to increase this further in the years ahead.

Please view my short video introduction to the CRF where I will describe our Unit and what we are hoping to achieve.
